I'm not religious, am atheist, but you have to admit that only a few animal species have ritualistic behavior.
Humans are one of those species.
We cannot eliminate this, nor should we.

But this does NOT have to be christian or even theistic.

Yeah. I 'assert' death is inevitable, there is only one life, the dead can't hear us when we honor them after they die.
This is particularly because the consciousness is held by our neurones, more specifically the synapses. After death, oxygen stops reaching them, they cannot sustain their processes and the cells simply dissolve, lyzosomes start leaking, and the pattern and arrangement that made a person who they are disappears.
One can claim consciousness is actually something else entirely, but without evidence it's a weaker assertion.
