According to the article Elijah said he was spared because his mother wouldn't let him go to the parties and was more concerned with his well being than his career as an actor. This is probably the only reason why he has been a successful actor from child through adulthood. The only other somewhat successful child actor that comes to mind is Drew Barrimore and I think she has already mentioned being an alcoholic and drug addict in her early teens.
