I think breastfeeding is really important, but once the kid starts growing teeth it's time to wean. Personally, my mom cut me off too early and I vaguely remember having a pacifier til age 3. On my 3rd birthday my parents cut me off. I don't think the pacifier thing would have happened if my mom would have weaned me just a few months later.
Also, I have a cat that was separated from her mom at a young age, and still wants to nurse on blankets, my shirt, whatever. At first I tried to discourage her, but she just wouldn't have it. So eventually I acquiesced and tried to train her to just nurse off of a certain blanket, which she does.. on a daily basis.
