The Brits would typically be on the left because most were right handed, and when fighting on horseback, the swords/spears would be drawn across the body and used by the right hand cut down opponents.
Many countries with their military history being rooted in more modern/gunpowder based weaponry would find issue with rifles being fired whilst on the left.
Pistols were fine, but riding on the right and firing left was found to be far easier.
