It depends on the respective law. The Austrian law allows for this, other countries' laws might not. Here in the UK, it's not permitted.
I posted the link earlier, it clearly states that the ballot is not invalid. You could draw the old 'dick-n-spunk' somewhere and it would still be valid.
The votes are then counted by a committee that includes a member of several parties, which all have to agree on the ballot being valid and belonging to whatever candidate.
