Gambino's lover was Guts' foster mother. The only reason they brought Guts with them was because she (Shisu) had recently miscarried Gambino's child and was practically insane with grief. Gambino never wanted to bring Guts with them because taking a baby from the corpse of it's parents is bad luck.

Guts overhears Griffith telling the princess none of his soldiers are really his friends. It's partially kind of true, partially Griffith just trying to manipulate the princess into thinking he's noble and not a ruff gruff mercenary. But Guts gets butthurt by that.
Griffith then loses to Guts, loses Guts as a soldier, and only then realizes Guts was probably the only person he considered a friend.
Remember that Griffith almost got himself killed for Guts against Zodd. That wasn't calculated . Griffith is super bromosexual for Guts in that anime kind of way. He's not used to the feeling because he's not used to actually caring about anybody. Which is why he gets mindfucked when Guts leaves.

The good parts of berzerk (first couple chapters) are more like a western graphic novel than a manga.
Very high quality images instead of low budget comic strip stuff. Charcoal drawn 2page landscape and shit.
Very little dialogue, so its mostly about appreciating the art and design.
Its dark and violent but doesnt come across as edgy, to me anyway.
I really recommend it. If you read the first volume and don't like it know that that's as good as it's gonna get so you didn't waste much time
