9. A rain of flaming hail and blood.
10. All of the grass and trees on Earth burning as a result of #9.

13. A bottomless pit opening in the Earth and the sky being obscured by smoke.

However a major disaster happens on Earth, food supplies become scarce, they need a way to keep people and supplies under control. They make it so you now need this implant in you or else you can't get food at all, since the water as a whole is contaminated by wormwood. Bottled water is still viable and there's more than enough of it under their supply, but you have to swear to take the mark before they'll give you any.
