I hear it's rather heavy-handedly pro-nationalist and anti-migrant, so this could explain the terrible reviews. Genuine feels in the beginning, the hints to typical windfalls of "poor wittle migrants" were funny.
Like any modern animated movie, it shoehorned in some godawful pop music, and other cultural cringe. The gay bird was hard to stomach oftentimes from his sheer campness.
The siege scenes were clumsy attempts to make the actual Angry Birds game mechanics relevant to the plot.

There is one haunting scene in the movie:
The birds were all brought up on a story that one day in the past the bird's livelihood was threatened, but the mighty bald eagle flew down from the mountain and saved them all. He became a symbol of pride that they all admired and knew they were safely protected by him.
Later in the movie when the pigs start arrive en masse and replacing the Bird's way of life with their own, the Red, Yellow and Black birds (the German flag colours) are all skeptical but get ostracized for "making the new guests uncomfortable"
Suspecting their way of life was threatened again, they all scale the mountain to try and find the mighty bald eagle.
Eventually they do find him, only to discovered he's now gotten fat and lazy and all he does it brag about the great deeds he's done in the past. When the 3 birds ask him for help, he keeps giving non answers and changing the subject.
This infuriates the Red bird who says something like:
"I used to look up to you, we all did. You used to represent things like Liberty and Freedom. Now you don't even know the meaning of those words. It's really sad to see that the only bird on this island who CAN fly, who CAN make a difference, is too afraid to do it"

Saw it yeaturday with the senpai.
If you are /pol/ minded you'll deffinently see the symbolism in it.
