Crimea is a super-important strategic region for control of the black sea, and Russia has operated a large base there since imperial days. I think there is something in Russia that sees Crimea as important to them far beyond actual reality. They sure thought for it like rabid dogs in WWII,despite the whole of Ukranian front colapsing they stubbornly refused to evacuate this natural fortress, to the point where they had to Germans had to haul their two giant siege guns to breach Sevastapol. I think most of our Mountain Corps is buried in that fucking peninsula.
To think of it, Putin is kind of a genius for reconquering that entire place with almost no casualties on either side,given the fierce battles that were waged for it throughout history.
