One more thing about atheism, from personal experience. The reason why so many atheists seem so insufferable and unhappy is because they haven't have come to grips with that their lives have no meaning. When you understand that there is no God, you understand there is no higher meaning to life. You become a nihilist. You then have to create a meaning yourself, and there most people utterly fail. I believe this is why religion is such an enduring institution, at times even useful. It gives the answers, maybe not the right ones, but answers nonetheless.
