First we need a few factors solved.

>How much fuel can this plane carry and how long can it fly with the fuel
>Fuel efficiency
>How long can the plane glide without fuel
Now we've got a maximum distance it could have gone. Subtract the distance it had already traveled, and now we've got a radius of where it could have gone from the point of disappearing.
If you want to take this a step further you can account for the fact the plane couldn't have just taken a 360 degree turn right away, and would have to make a turn.
Now you have the total area the plane could be in right now.
Look for

>Makeshift airstrips (you'd have to use satellite imaging for this)
