As far as I know, the word "meme" as the teacher means it, since it's impossible to singlehandedly create an instance of its actual meaning, is a picture of something like 9/11 downloaded from /b/ with non-mainstream, edgy content and usually the word "nigger" or "suicide" for good measure.
Not ok to ask this of students.
Nor is it ok to demand students to visit a website crawling with porn like 4chan or plebbit. This is relying on the student already somehow knowing what a "meme" is under the assumption they've already visited these kinds of sites. Same kind of thing when a teacher requires students to make a Facebook and add each other on it for school. Not appropriate.

I teach high school history and to be honest this really bothers me. I think the idea of potentially trivializing the sacrifice of thousands of people into a meme (which only ever spoofs ideas) is teaching kids that the war was something to make light of.
I know plenty of teachers who do the (now classic) Declaration of Independence breakup letter or Founding Fathers Facebook, but this is a little overboard. My students just got a rigorous research paper as their final and they would know I'd lost it if they got a fucking meme as their final project.
