I've seen that sort of thought process used in a business, where during crunch time the development team would work 14-18 hour days (some guys basically just slept in their car) and it'd go on like this for ~3 months. The burnout was palpable (smell too). Then we had a group doing a review of commits and bugs and they found that the amount of bugs introduced into the code increased dramatically during the 3-month crunch time.
Guys were so tired they weren't doing good work, they were just 'doing work'. Boss and execs decided that these hours weren't working out very well. Next time we get a crunch, they institute a policy where you can't work any longer than 12 hours.
Morale was better, code was better; fewer bugs, the software delivery was more or less on schedule. Substantial improvement. The team did better work on less hours.
