Why isn't it justified for Bernie Sanders to take out 18 billion dollars from the military spending depicted in this chart, and invest it into his plans for College and Healthcare. I'm not a Bernie fan, but I'm legitimately interested at why this can't work. Does the US need that 18 billion so badly?
>>
It's justifiable to reduce he military budget. It's not justifiable to use that money to pay for art and women's studies degrees
>>
>International affairs
>40 billion

Is this like foreign aid? CUT IT.
>>
You do realize this isn't federal expenditures right?
>>
We spend much more money on healthcare than we do military. If you reduced the entire military budget to $0, we would still have a deficit.
>>

Don't be a faggot OP. You've left off social security, Medicare and Medicaid - so supporting old people and niggers costs 2x as much as the military

Firstly, we spend hundreds of billions of dollars MORE on healthcare than military, and it is in dire need of reform.
Secondly, free college would cost at least $40 billion dollars now, and that's not even including the fact that many more people would be in college than now.

OP didn't post actual spendings of 2015. In reality we spent about 3.7 trillion dollars, and healthcare was the largest expense.

we have like a 59% workforce participation rate right now, the lowest its been since women started entering the workforce in the 60s.
obama redefined unemployment to make our unemployment rate look better than it really is, not even joking

this is why bernie sanders is a fucking joke, we already blow most of our budget on dem programs
>>
>>74455407
I ran the math a few months back when he suggested cutting funding from military to pay for his programs.
If you cut the entire military budget it would bump our medicare participation rate from ~16% to ~24% iirc.
He wants 100% coverage. We would have to basically triple our taxes across the board.
This doesn't include a single other program.
>>
>>74454116

If niggers alone simply all disappeared the entire human race would see a golden age that would last hundreds if not thousands of years....

Instead we're going to live long enough to see humanity enter yet another thousand year dark age.
>>
I feel like a lot of people don't understand what cutting the military budget would do to the economy. In a lot of places military bases essentially prop up the local economy, so less military means less business in those places. On top of that, a significant amount of military money is spent on American things made in America. It's essentially being pumped back into the economy anyways.

And what part of their budget should be cut? No soldiers get body armor anymore. That'll save us some money right?

lucky basterds! Social security expenses make up a measly 33% for you guys. Here it accounts for 40% of all public spending with over half of all unemployed being foreigners (read "refugees").

Ex Government Employee here.

The shit that Sanders is spouting will not work once he actually tries to implement it. From my times dealing with the Government and the Military, the immense amount of bloat is there for a reason.

First, you have contractors. EVERYTHING has to be contracted. Contractors will ask for "reassurance fees" or "on-time guarantee fees".

Then you have the colossal amount of idiots inside the government. Expect nothing to be done on time, and expect something important to break as soon as you need it. This requires budget increases well beyond what is normal.

Finally, you have budget black holes. I'm not exactly sure what money goes to where, as people don't like you asking, but this does happen. Money will go flying out of random projects (Aussies, look at the NBN) into random companies that don't have any checkable history or even assets.

The budget isn't the cut-and-dry thing most people imagine it to be. It's a convoluted clusterfuck of different interests vying for their own results.

This isn't a threat at all, but I seriously would not be surprised if Bernie had a hit attempted on him if he was elected and started doing what he's planning to do. That's just how the world works.

By the way, if anyone here happens to be going on a road trip from Perth to Darwin in July, time your trip so you're halfway between Newman and Port Headland around 2:30 in the morning on a weekday. You'll see some seriously spooky shit. Don't photograph it.

We do that.

It's NOT funded by the government.

It's called "scholarships."

It's why capitalist education systems generally have the smartest people. Either they're smart enough to have someone take an interest in furthering their education to see how far they can go, or they're paying for the education and damned well better make use of it.

Also, like >>74462335 said, there is always the option of community college (mine was so cheap that with my Pell Grant I basically got PAID to go there), and the people that actually USE their education can either get a decent job to help them through two more years at a 4-year university, or even get scholarships depending on their performance in CC.

Giving free college to even the top 10% is dumb, in my opinion. (Even 10% of Bernie's plan is $1.8 trillion at the very least.)

Nignog, can you not math?

If we got rid of ALL government spending on EVERYTHING, we could not pay for Bernie's $18t plans.

How the fuck are you going to sit there and say we'd "still be spending so much on the military" when we wouldn't even be able to afford a single soldier and rifle?

Fucking idiot Bongs...

>1.8 trillion
Whoa, over what time period?

To me, the problem boils down to where the money for the higher education of the ~10% of the population that drives society comes from.

First option are the banks. People get in debt until their early 30s and the banks get more money. But that way people generally have to postpone family creation until they get their shit together, which is currently happening.

Second option is to subsidize some people's education and let their own money go into houses, cars and the local economy. But this positive impact might be negated by higher taxes.

Imo, education of the generally smart children is the best thing a state can invest in, since a professional will generally pay back his fees hundredfolds in taxes over his lifetime.

>>74463906
The US can't really outspend China in the long run, so they'll have to focus on spending smart instead of spending much and curb the bloated contractors a bit.

Bernie's plans are unrealistic - several trillion dollars would be added to the national debt.

>not that it really matters as bernie has 0% chance of winning
The global economy is in a strange enough condition as it is - destabilizing America even further wouldn't be great.

A slightly decreased purchasing power would be worth the added independence, to any true American anyhow.

Yeah the 5 year number is bullshit - the implications it has on a global scale is serious though. And it's not like China has any way of extorting America. Bernie would fuck the world over though

Bernie's proposed plans will cost over $18 trillion over ten years time.

I was adding the lump sum of his plans, though, and not just the education, so that was my bad.

Georgia might as well have spent 50% of its GDP on the army and it still would've gotten fucked in 2 weeks. Also, interwar Germany was actually crippled by the reparations and ordinace factories generally converted back to civilian goods manufacturing.

Honestly, if you cut 130 bln from the welfare and 20 bln from the military, you could easily pay for 1/10 of children to get a free ride. But paying for all the retards to go to univeristy is in fact retarded.

If we did that, we'd just be cutting $20b from the military, since the free ride would TECHNICALLY be welfare, heh. But yes, $150b/year sounds about right.

>>74465680
>But paying for all the retards to go to univeristy is in fact retarded.
That's my main issue.

When college is government-funded, it will just become High School 2.0. Hell, it already HAS in some places, even in the U.S.

When we actually have to PAY for schooling, we're likely to take it more seriously. (Idiots taking out student loans don't coount as "paying," since most of them don't.)

It honestly is.

Well, I can't speak for Unis, since I only ever went to a 2-year Community College, but all the coursework there was pretty much easier-than or on-par-with what I was doing in high school.

America would do much better if we emphasized trade schools and apprenticeships instead of saying, "YOU HAVE TO GO TO COLLEGE!"
>>
>>74467650
>emphasized trade schools and apprenticeships
Even here trades and blue collar work are seen as 2nd rate, unjustly so. It seems that it'll be hard to convince a lib city dweller used to posting on instagram at cafes all day to become a plumber or welder, even though those are relatively high paid professions.(even here)

Why isn't it justified for Donald trump to take out 280 billion dollars from the Socal spending depicted in this chart, and invest it into his plans for Defence and Healthcare. I'm not a Trump fan, but I'm legitimately interested at why this can't work. Does the US need that 280 billion so badly?

These days many states offer dual/concurrent credit through CC. In Colorado it's even possible to graduate with a 2yr degree from Highschool. In Florica you can enroll in college as a homeschooled highschooler.
>>
>>74468789
That wasn't a full answer. Entitlements aren't discretionary spending. You can't take from those programs and shuffle it to others.
>>
>>74469133
>In Colorado it's even possible to graduate with a 2yr degree from Highschool.
Well, I haven't been in high school for almost 20 years, but that kinda seems like bullshit.

You might be able to get some credits for AP classes, but graduating from high school without actually taking courses at a college with an associates degree in any state seems too far fetched.

Over two years of taking AP and 5pt classes it is. Colorado has their shit together when it comes to this. The HS coursework has to meet CC criteria. And th core class work for a general education AA meets the criteria for the first two years of GenEd classes at all State Colleges. Basically what Colorado did was; instead of lowering the requirements for intro classes in college, they raised the requirements for AP work in Highschool and gave it college credit.

We shouldn't be lowering standards. We should be raising them. Which is what Colorado did, then standardized it throughout the state so you don't have to take GEO 101 which is no more informative than eighth grade Earth Science.
