Yeah, but you see, defeated military powers who started a war of aggression don't get to dictate terms of a conditional surrender. Especially if you have a super weapon that they do not. Especially when even without said super weapon the prevailing power is prepared to invade, and defeat, their enemy.
Also, in the military, it is the commands job to plan and execute operations which are likely to end up in as few losses as possible to complete the objective. Just so happens, that time they had a weapon which guaranteed little to no losses of their own, maximum losses to the enemies manpower, ability to wage war, and the countries will to fight.
