So fucking tired of the annoying "USA! USA! USA!" chants every time NASA or SpaceX achieves something trivial while piggybacking on Russian and German technology.

Russia won the space race.

Furthest Manned Flight so far. Only nation to send mankind to another planetary body in our solar system.
Soviet Union was in the lead for a long time but the space race ends furthest from the starting block.
Any manned mission to Mars will be the winner in the future. Go furthest = win.

Yes, idiot. A race is something where people strive to reach the end first. You're implying that the Soviets got into space and then just stopped "running" so to speak. That is, by far, the most nonsensical view of the Space Race.
>>
>>74381511
The USSR no longer exists. Even if they won it either means they're more cucks than winner, or their victory was useless.

The US just discovered hundreds of earth-like planets in habitable-zones of local stars. We started winning and never stopped.

> Although the Katyusha was very effective on the Eastern Front during World War II, the advanced state of the German rocket program amazed Russian engineers who inspected its remains at Peenemünde and Mittelwerk after the end of the war in Europe. The Americans had secretly moved most leading German scientists and 100 V-2 rockets to the United States in Operation Paperclip, but the Russian program greatly benefited from captured German records and scientists, in particular drawings obtained from the V-2 production sites.
>>
>>74383608
Shove your faux-logic up your ass. The US mirrored the accomplishments of Russia before pulling ahead and beating them to the moon. You try to create arbitrary distinctions about where the "Space Race" ended, but you're only doing so to serve your arbitrary biases. The Russians were just as interested as the US in reaching the moon first. They failed. They are now inferior. That's that. You can try to post a rebuttal when Britain is an empire again.

>>
>>74381511
It didn't because it dissolved in 1991. The space "race" wasn't a contest of checkpoints and a list of "first" but a continuous political situation.
>>
>>74383445
Your definition of the space race is wrong. The whole race ended after the moon landing. It was a feat of scientific and engineering that couldn't be beat by the soviets. It's not like it was over once they got Sputnik or Gagarin in orbit. Quite the contrary, that's what really got it started.
Both sides were trying to outdo one another, basically to prove the precision of their ballistic missiles.
And the US won.
No one but autists who somehow feel inadequate over a foreign country debates that fact.
>>
>>74383865
Kill yourself.
>>
>>74383865
That is why we won.

It wasn't about who did what first, it was about who could go farther.

The USSR had the ability to steal their entire countries wealth, ignore safety, and run dangerous and frankly inhumane missions to get their 'firsts'.

In the end the USSR broke and the US won, and when the iron curtain fell we found out the average citizen of the USSR was eating boot leather to live.
>>

A race is from point "A" to point "B". The space race was about controlling high ground. Just because the Soviets had better acceleration at the start of that race and made it to the halfway point doesn't mean they won, it means we caught up and passed them.

>implying Russia didn't also piggyback on German tech

They captured plenty of scientists from all over Europe as well as dozens of V2 rockets to reverse engineer and the Dora facility where the V2 was mass produced was in their occupation zone...

By the end of the Cold War over 50% of ALL their technological 'innovation', including in the military, came from reverse engineering Western tech.

Putin himself even talks about this in interviews from his semi-official biography.

His main job in East Germany was to procure various tech through bribery or other means.

He complains about how the KGB was collecting all of this stuff and the Soviet bureaucracy was hopelessly inefficient and incapable of making use of his hard work and that of his colleagues.

Not facts. What is a fact is that technology is an endless progression by humanity in general.

What matters is not who came up with the concepts. What matters is what people DID with the Concepts?

Ever wonder why the USA gets credit for airflight? We didn't invent the concepts. The French did. What we did was take those concepts, put an internal combustion engine on them and created self propelled flight. The Kitty Hawk Flier.

We did not invent artificial electricity. The English did. But we did realize that electrical impulses could be transmitted down copper wire and that those pulses could be used to form an alphabet to transmit messages at the speed of light. Morse Code, the Telegraph and electrical wiring.

We did not invent the theories of gravity and motion. The English did. But we did use those theory to calculate and launch a rocket that was invented by China to land humans on the moon.

Don't look at the acorns. look at the oak tree.

Its relevant. The point is however that "firsts" are a dime a dozen. You can be first at something but not best at something. Sure, Russia was first in space. But since that early period they have lagged far far behind the USA.

And if we view this as a never ending race, the USA is waaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of anyone else. We've had several missions to Jupiter in the last few decades as an example. No other country has gone past mars.

And Russia's only experience with Mars was a suicide impact with the surface.

Shuttle is overpriced and overrated shit.

Our rockets are the same as at the moment they was developed, only new materials and new electronics goes as modification, because we had engineers with imperial (pre-commie) education developing it and they where superior to everything that is today.

If not for ukrainians, that took over the space programs after gen.Konstruktor Korolev death, we`d have N-1 rocket finished and would have the base on the moon. (Srsly guys, you need to finish the project, if you want humanity go to space. Invest in rebuilding N-1, not in shitty space-x and HOTOL fraud. In current situation we are not able to do this.)

Arian-5, is a copy of our Energia rocket, that was the rocket for our version of Shuttle. Where is yours? In a fucking museum, because it`s useless, overpriced and dangerous.

We made Bios-1, Bios-2 and Bios-3 - where biosystems for space station where developed. Oxygen, water and food regeneration.

While USA did biosphere-2 with pauly shore. Google it - it`s anecdote, not an experiment.

I`m not saying we won space race, because only the satellites matter today, we are not leaders in satellites and we did not build the moon base. But american public space program is just silly.

Energia was cool, but the boosters were liquid fueled, Ariane 5 uses solid boosters and has more in common with the shuttle in design to be honest.
Energia was cool, shame that once the USSR fell apart it was too expensive. At least you dumped Buran before it killed anyone like the shuttle did.
The N1 is ancient now, better off beginning from scratch.

The Russian moon landing plan was pretty cool, imagine Apollo on a much smaller budget.
The N1 rocket only had 2/3 of the lifting capacity of the Saturn V, so the plan was a 2 man Soyuz and a 1 man lander. The Cosmonaut had to spacewalk to and from the lander attached to the Soyuz as there was no internal passage. The lander itself was tiny, only 40% of the mass of the Apollo LM and used the same engine for landing and ascent only leaving behind some fuel tanks and landing gear on the moon, unlike the LM's staged design.

first animal, first woman, and first robot on the moon are all irrelevant, yes

The moon sucks and there's no reason to ever go there. First man and first man in open space are both still useful. We still put men in space and sometimes those men have to do EVAs. We still have space stations and satellites(and we still have women but shouldn't so that's a point off for the Ruskies).

Basically the Soviets won the Space Race and Americans jerking off about the moon won't change that. America did good stuff in space, but the moon landings weren't in any way useful beyond publicity stunts. There's just no fucking reason to go there.

They canned the two rockets they were developing from Shuttle tech (notice the return to a normal design) in favour of a third rocket based on shuttle tech, after having spent billions already. I have no idea what NASA is doing.
>ares 1 will never be a proper rocket
They designed Ares 1 to be a Soyuz equivalent for launching Orion into LEO and Ares V to be a big heavy cargo lifter with lift capacity like the Saturn V.

Now they replaced it with a single rocket that will do neither job well and be two expensive for simple LEO launches to the ISS which is what Ares 1 was for.
Useless.

The Soviet Union built its space program off of Nazi Germany's missile program, which was based around using the V-2. Russia continues to use a variant of the Soviet R7 ICBM in the Soyuz program. Both the V-2 and R7 were liquid fueled rockets, the propulsion system for which was invented by an American.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_H._Goddard

So no Goddard means no liquid fueled rockets, no liquid fueled rockets means no von Braun, no von Braun means no V-2, no V-2 means no Soviet ICBM program, no Soviet ICBM program means no Sputnik, no Sputnik means no Vostok, no Vostok means no Soyuz, which means no Soviet/ Russian space program.
Thanks for playing.

Other countries cant compete. The USA is the dominant power in space scientifically, our record illustrates this. We were building ultraviolet observatories while the Russians were trying to send the "first" of (insert whatever here) into space for no other reason than to be first.

Plus USSR is irrelevant after moon landing, like utterly irrelevant. Its hilarious that a Russian probe smashed violently into the lunar surface while we were busy walking on it for the first time.

Okay, you know what, I'll qualify that: the moon sucks but there was a reason to go there once, to find out that it sucked. Once that was established, THEN there was no reason to back.

So, ok, the Americans can have first man on the moon. But the only reason they set it as the arbitrary finish line for the Space race was because then they could declare themselves the winners. If the Soviets had reached the moon first and then America had gotten to Mars they'd be tripping over themselves to declare the moon worthless and Mars to be the real finish line.

You lost the Space Race America. It's okay, though. Take comfort in the fact that you still won the Cold War, the USSR is gone, and Russia's a shithole.

They actually launched quite a few probes to Venus. They managed to get 11 probes inside Venus' atmosphere, and of those, the first had a communications failure just before entry, the next made it into the atmosphere and transmitted some atmospheric data but didn't make it to the surface, then the rest all landed successfully and transmitted atmospheric and surface data.

It's pretty impressive when you think that these probes had to be light enough to launch into space, but sturdy enough to withstand the 460 celsius surface temperature and atmospheric pressure that's equivalent to being over half a mile under the sea on Earth.

>The competition began on August 2, 1955, when the Soviet Union responded to the US announcement four days earlier of intent to launch artificial satellites for the International Geophysical Year, by declaring they would also launch a satellite "in the near future". The Soviet Union beat the US to this, with the October 4, 1957 orbiting of Sputnik 1, and later beat the US to the first human in space, Yuri Gagarin, on April 12, 1961. The race peaked with the July 20, 1969 US landing of the first humans on the Moon with Apollo 11. The USSR tried but failed manned lunar missions, and eventually cancelled them and concentrated on Earth orbital space stations.

So uh

Are we going to pretend who did useless shit first matters the most or can we accept what really matters is who's the furthest in whatever fields
>>

Do you even know what a race is? It's not about who's first through the checkpoints, it's who's first across the finish line, and the Germans were clearly first when they sent some American test monkeys to the moon.
