Why do I get the feeling that all this technological progress may be sowing the seeds to a dystopian future? We always manage to abuse all powerful technologies that may have been created for good, just imagine once we create a good enough AI that could replace 99 percent of the military. Most, if not all oppressive regimes were only overthrown because a section of a nations army or defense force decided to rebel against the government. Once we create these technologies, we wont ever have the ability to check the government.

Your worth to the rest of society is gauged by how much you pay in to the state in taxes, and how many things you buy to support the consumer market.
You carry a surveillance device around in your pocket every day. You willfully let private corporations probe every aspect of your private life. People are increasingly trying, actively trying, to give up their own freedoms. The state has made perpetual warfare a norm. The state has made thought crimes real.
Things don't need to be comically overt for them to be horrible.
