A friend who is a GP/family doctor told me that most of them don't have a clue about how certain drug combinations can fuck you up, and that the only people who really spend any amount of time studying stuff like that are pharmacists, who aren't really in a position to question the prescription anyway.
My GP was originally a fucking economics graduate, a maxilofacial surgeon I recently went to was a fucking dentist originally, most doctors sadly aren't House, or specialists in their field even.

At least in America many dentists practice general dentistry before going into a specialty after deciding they prefer one area. You still need excellent class ranks and grades and test scores to be admitted. Not sure about britlands dental requirements but may not be fair to say your oral surgeon was a dentist first as though it's a bad thing.

I don't know how things work in the UK but here in America that is literally the primary function of the pharmacist. Hospitals have clinical pharmacists who review every order the doctors make.
