Sure they have, in past generations men worked for rights and respect, men had to fight for their country for the right to vote, they had to earn land or titles to be important and respected. They had to work for their family and that made them the head of the household, men were respected.
Today men are expected to work but we don't see any of the benefit, this magnificent society in the west is seen as patriarchal despite men liberating women from the home and creating comfy spaces to give women the choice to work easy jobs and support themselves.
Everything we did had benefit back to us and so it made sense to rationally work for those things, but now the mutual respect is gone.
What keeps society healthy is people working in jobs that they're suited for to maximize productivity, people respect others contributions.
