California is by and large, a red state. The cities and coastal areas are liberal (blue, democrat as it were ) because they are flooded with illegal immigrants, limousine liberals, people who look up to limousine liberals, and gerrymandering (manipulating the voting districts). Rural California (and there is a lot) is fairly conservative. Liberals want everyone to believe that country folk are backwards and uneducated and easily influenced by demagoguery. Conservatives believe city-dwelling liberals put on airs with one another in a competition to be more altruistic towards who they see as "minorities" and the poor.
but yeah, Pete Wilson used to kick ass as governor. Then came Gray Davis and things went to hell. We got him recalled, and put dummy Arnold Schwarzennegger in his place, but he was a nitwit who couldn't lead or get anything done. He paid off his cronies and left office so that Jerry Brown could have a second round at being governor. Now our state is bankrolling weird crap like high-speed rail that doesn't go anywhere because it's impossible. We call him "governor moonbeam" because he's a hippie from the 60's.

i want to add this disparity between country and city folk is a serious problem. Our state legislature can't get anything done. All the democrats can do is keep redrawing districts to gain some voting advantage, and keep letting in Mexicans and other foreigners.
But California is awesome. It's an incredibly beautiful state. It's rich. It's got a mixed and interesting history. Lots of agriculture, military, high-tech, Hollywood, and California has always been a place where you can escape from elsewhere to "do your own thing".

I want to add another thing: Proposition 187, which is widely misunderstood in American history. It's true that California seems to lead-the-way when it comes to new ideas and new legislation (I dunno why -- maybe because our institutions are a little more "loose" out here), but prop 187 was a prime example of how most of California is conservative, but so many liberals hold seats of power.
Prop 187 was a bill that basically said "If you want to enjoy public services like welfare and public education, you need to be an American citizen."
Chaos ensued. "Racism" became the cry, because GUESS WHAT?!! OUR SCHOOL ARE FULL OF ILLEGAL MEXICAN KIDS! (who would'a thunk?) and we all know who enjoys food stamps and section 8 housing?
Well, our 9th circuit supreme court struck it down -- which was the intention -- and it went to the governor's desk. The next step was the US Supreme court would look at the case (which is how it works) and the case would be surely upheld (at the time). Everyone in America held their breath, knowing this could get rid of illegal Mexicans, all eleven million of them. America could define its borders again.
Gray Davis (then governor of California) did not pass it on to the Supreme Court.
It was supposed to. He didn't allow it.
To this day, what everyone is told is "It was struck down by the court as being unconstitutional" but this is only part of the story. Most people don't know how legislation works on that level -- that it was SUPPOSED TO GO TO THE SUPREME COURT and our liberal governor (Davis) "took it off his desk". He grossly affected American history with that act, and only a small segment of Americans realize this.
