Since /g/ is apparently full of retarded socialist retards I figured here would be a better place to ask: What do you think of the "free software" movement?
Apparently people think that Linux is better than Windows just because "lol its free" and because all the shit on it "is lol free", completely ignoring how the economy and market work.
It's like Linux is literally the Communist OS.
Because an item is free to get it's "communism"
I'm calling soft bait here.
Also windows is free if you pirate it.

If you steal a gold plated watch, is that watch free?

>someone chooses to offer their service for free on their own volition
that doesn't sound like communism to me
>yfw the "it's GNU/Linux" copypasta is basically when Berniebots say "excuse me, it's Democratic Socialism, not Socialism"
Linux development is done out in the open where anybody can verify what's going on.

I'm arguing over people who say that ALL software should be free, even though that would completely halt almost all progress in computing.

No, you committed a crime which means you have a debt that needs to be repaid (prison sentence or a fine)

>Linux
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

All the OS are becoming attached to the botnet. It doesn't fucking matter.

i think both software development models have their benefits and short comings and help to keep each other honest. the 'free' in free software isn't entirely about the price. the free is about the source code being available for people to use. anyone who wants to learn to program can open the hood on any of the programs and tinker with them or make them into something new without any legal consequences. there are linux hippies but there is a lot more to open source software than that.
