they attacked Cambodia and Laos but too late, in 70 and then 71. The 71 invasion of Laos was by the ARVN and was a disaster, the US had something like 100 helicopters go down supporting them. Lam Son 719/Dewey Canyon II was the name.

Not as heavily as it did. The US should have just torched the North (in turn crushing the commies), and left everything else to the South. Beyond that, the most the US should have done was just occupy the region briefly to crush any communist resurgences while allowing the South to operate.

The M14 was heavy as hell though. The m16 was a fuck up but the problems in Vietnam went way beyond what rifle everyone carried. It's not like the US armed with M14s in 1965 and 1966 was winning either.

Short answer? No.
Long answer? Yes, but they fucked up the initial stages. The US should have gone balls to the wall early on, the trickling ramp up only allowed the North to fight back harder and for discontent to grow at home. Imagine a world in which the entire force of the US was put in play by LBJ and Vietnam was unified under the South by 1970. This also would have limited influence of Commies outside of Vietnam preventing the Khmer Rouge and Laos from getting fucked.
This is where the theoretical issues start, would Vietnam then be Korean War 2: Electric Boogaloo with China directly contributing? Hard to say as China had it's own issues and were genuinely concerned about a back-door invasion by the Soviet Union.

i agree that yes, especially in the cold war era it was the right decision to intervene.
yes, they could have gone balls deep and maybe ended with a far better result but, i think that if the us had played its cards right with supporting the right leader of the south this would have avoided the entire political instability of the south. you could argue that if the south was as united as the north, us support would have actually been useful instead of trying to help an already failed state.
basically, us would have won if they considered the internal issues of the south, and played on the battlefield much smarter rather than spending $$$ on dropping napalm and agent orange for limited results.
