In 2015 scientists sequenced the DNA of a very old European from Romania(Oase1, ~35000 years BC) and they found he had a pretty high Neanderthal admixture, like around 9%(average Euro has 2%), and determined that it was due to a fairly recent Neanderthal ancestor. This admixture did show in his appearance apparently, although it was determined mostly by very few remains.

In general, Neanderthal admixture has been going down anyway. He was particularly high on it.

Neanderthals had Europe and Middle East for half a million years but their technological and cultural progress was sluggish. Humans showed up and things started to change very rapidly.
Anyway, humans had lived in Eurasia for 25k years before taking over Europe and they lived in places which are understudied(Middle East, Central Asia etc).
