I am 23 now and I remember back in 2nd or 3rd grade, the critical time when you are learning how to write and spell, my class was part of an experimental trial where they took an approach of teaching us to spell that was more like "Spell the word how you feel is best!"
They would not correct incorrect spelling or grammar and it took years for me to correct my horrible spelling. Turns out this was pushed into the school by the federal gov't as a new way of teaching kids who's first language was not English how to spell, we were just the guinea pigs.
When my mother found out she was furious, but the school said this program came straight from the federal gov't and there was nothing they could do but teach it.
