Samurai swords are shit when up against other swords because they're amazingly fragile.
Most sword fights between samurais aren't as they're depicted by jewywood; most fights would end in a standoff with one showing more aggression by stance and vocal 'growls'.
If either samurai felt the other had a stronger presence and ability they would back off, sheathe their sword and bow seeking for mercy.
Very rarely would there be any actual combat and it would be nothing more than two or three calculated strikes.
The odds of them parrying an attack would be rarer still; have you ever had to re-sharpen a damaged samurai sword?

In reality a katana was relatively normal compared to other types of sword. It was less flexible and broke easier compared to the steel swords of high and late medieval Europe, but that high rigidness and relatively heavy weight also meant that they could be used for very powerful cuts and thrusts.
What really made the European process of steelmaking superior was that it could produce high quality blades for relatively low prices. By the high middle ages and onward even regular soldiers in Europe could afford decent swords to go along with the rest of their equipment, whereas katanas in Japan remained a lot more exclusive.

He was a benevolent and good person who genuinely cared for the people of his city, whom he grew up amongst in the slums when he was a child.

The Samurai - old time and ancient Japanese in general - were epic.

Medieval knight armor - from chainmail to partly-plated to fullplated was the most advanced armor of its time worldwide. (It also was not heavy and warriors were ver agile weight ~30kg distributed on the entire body - modern soldier equipment weights much more)
All warriors, also european ones, were fearless. Remember their training began between the age of 7 and 12(at the latest).
Knights, guards etc. were bound by a codex of honor. This is also why they were outlawed by the nobeled merchants of the late medieval period and during the renaissance. If orders were against their codex, they mostly wouldn't follow them, often even going into open resistance, subsequently killing the honorless one who gave the order. (Praetorian tradition inherted from ancient rome)
Also european Warriors were experts in all kinds of weapons. Maces, Axes, different types of swords, spears, daggers, hand to hand combat etc. (apprenticeship of usually ~8 to 12~ years = time for many weapon-types)
There is no such thing as "one of the best swords" or "the best sword". Every sword was made for the challenges of its era. Every sword is also a compromise. Katana were made for pricise and effective cutting, while e.g. a high medieval hand-and-a-half sword was made for welll performing thusting and bes possible cutting-performence. Also european swords are made to be used as warhammers if gripped at the blade.(works perfect against chainmail and platearmor)
As a swordfighter (HEMA) I would always rely on a hand-and-a-half-sword or an onehanded sword + shield over a katana if it was a fight to death, since it gives me more options to use it.

He was a great writer, orator, lawmaker, politician, and military strategist.
