I think Reagan, when asked about the nat. Debt said something like "Our debt is old enough to make its own decisions", which I take to mean exactly that, we don't care about our debt anymore. So, my theory is that the only way that the US can keep running itself is through the influx of capital from other parts of the world, the US economy basically couldn't stand on its own two feet.
Say Trump were to be elected, and he would immediately introduce protectionist policies, wouldn't he very quickly discover that foreign investment into US companies and foreign capital coming into the country would shrink and that would, even if he managed to decrease the de facto debt, lead to big problems overall in the economy?

The protectionist policies are the same ones that other countries currently have in place -- those will just protect local industries (steel, auto, coal, manufacturing, etc.) and really have nothing to do with whether other countries want to keep buying our bonds.
So for the first couple years he can easily keep fueling our economy with debt, while he works to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse in the government. Massive budget cuts. And if he gets his tax plan through congress that will give the entire economy a huge shot in the arm. America currently has one of the highest corporate tax rates.
Any deficit incurred by lowering taxes could easily be paid by selling government asset. Very few people realize how much land the U.S. government owns (practically 50% of the western united states). But hopefully with a rising economy will come rising tax receipts, so drastic measures won't have to be taken.

It's not like he's going to go full protectionist. Most countries are much worse than we are when it comes to this. They want to dump their product all over here, but they don't want to take our product.
Some of this is really good stuff. For example, Caterpillar tractors and John Deer agricultural equipment. China won't take it, and when they do, it's taxed 45%. On top of that they manipulate their currencies artificially lower to make their products artificially cheaper.
Did you know in some cases, 90% of the reason factories are more expensive to build in the U.S. is not due to labor costs, but the high taxes / insane regulations (environmental, etc.)? All Trump wants to do is balance out trade with these countries that are ripping us off (i.e. China) by getting them to accept more of our product and reduce their tariffs. He also wants to repeal back some of the overreaching regulations (carbon taxes and other stupid shit like that) so we can start making stuff cheaper here and expand our market.
The whole "trade war" thing is only if they don't comply. If they refuse to lower their tariffs, then we will slap tariffs on them. Trump thinks he won't even need to, because the mere threat will make them behave. I'm inclined to believe him -- China needs us more than we need them. We're not the ones who have to import all of our technology, food, and oil.
