NATO's eastward expansion is a betrayal of the agreement made with Russia when the Berlin Wall came down. We just keep spreading east anyway and it makes Putin understandably nervous. No one should be surprised that the Russians aren't letting go of Ukraine without putting up a fight.
The Ukrainians themselves thought NATO and the EU would make their country better, but really that isn't going to happen and now they're worse off than ever.
