They were opportunists, and they filled a void.
In the old days, nobody thought to teach "women's studies".
Then some opportunists realized that they could propagandize a new generation of impressionable young women if they could get them into a classroom and award them college credit for "teaching" them to be a feminist. So they created the "academic discipline" of women's studies. Basically, they just marched into the universities and started teaching it.
It doesn't take a whole lot to get courses added to a curriculum. I used to work in an academic department of a university, and I've seen new courses added simply as the result of the juice that a single faculty member had. The faculty member would write the syllabus, and he could shape the course to match his own topics of interest.
Sometimes entire academic departments get added that are 100% fucking bullshit. Like this department here at Syracuse, for example:

Basically, they take retards with the IQ a 2 year old, hold their hand over a typewriter, have them type stuff out, and then claim that the retards actually typed those words and are expressing themselves.
