Smoking a pack a week or so isnt going to have the same effect as smoking a pack a day of course.
The effects of auto exhaust and other air pollution are about as detrimental as smoking, and only 15% of smokers develop cancer related to it, granted this is higher than the population norm and does rise your chance of getting cancer.

As long as you don't get cancer before 40, you can get away with smoking when young in a way. The effects of long term smoking get very bad as you get older. Clogged up arteries, COPD, increased risk of all types of cancer, increase risk of stroke, AAA and heart attack because arteries are fucked up.
