Yes. I've been sober in Alcoholics Anonymous for over 5 years. Nearly all of my friends are recovering alcoholics and addicts.
The story is always the same: alcoholics can drink alcoholically for years, sometimes decades, and hold their life together. Heroin addicts fall to pieces in less than a year, once they start injecting, unless they are independently wealthy and don't have to function.
