My grandpa grew up in a part of Germany that changed between Germany and Poland a few times between 1914 and 1945. He said nobody really cared about that. Poles went to a Polish church, Germans went to a German church, and that was it. Apart from that Poles and Germans lived side by side without any problems.

Helmut Kohl had the decision to get back west prussia and maybe other areas and he refused. Of course this is a huge disaster but you have to remember one a few things:
These areas were now full of polish people, not germans anymore. While they would have adapted over time, I doubt that they would have been happy.
On the other hand, the GDR (German democratic republic) was like the "king" of the commie states in terms of economy/technology. Lots of the technology that soviet spies stole from the west (like the first small computer, my father actually got these stolen devices to work with as an engineer) were send to the GDR because only there were the capable hands to deal with stuff like this. The soviet motherland didn´t know what to do with it.
Seeing that after 1990, east germany was basically shit compared to west germany while the "new areas" (i.e. west prussia) would have been shit compared to east germany. Getting this clay probably would have dragged us down for decades because we would have had to pump in lots of money.
