Yesterday there was a massive protest by UW students (my alma mater) that blocked off access to a major hospital.
Among their demands were that the university stop asking prospective students if they had committed a violent felony in the past (dats rayciss), that the university divest from private prisons (they hold little if any stock in them) and that they should practice affirmative action at the faculty level.
And now I hear about this bullshit from the other big university in my city. The fuck is happening?

What this means is that employers and schools won't be able to ask about certain or all prior convictions. While this may appear to be a decent progressive idea in certain cases (ex. possession of small amounts of marijuana, grinders or paraphernalia) it obviously has its limits. What's fucked up about the UW protests is that the UW doesn't ask about minor criminal convictions. They only ask if you've committed a violent felony.

My grandmother and mom were both social workers and they both became disillusioned by the shittyness of the people they were helping (my grandmother developed dementia and my mother went back to school and became a nurse).

Becoming a psychiatrist does require you to go to medical school for 4 years and have residency for another 4 but that residency is much less demanding than other medical fields.
Psychiatrist due to insurance reasons will mostly only focus on medication and rarely use psychological techniques unless they happen to find a rich client base that doesn't mind being charged for something the insurance won't cover. You will see the client for 15 minutes while discussing how the medication then kick then out the door for the next person.
At most your psychology knowledge will be used to know who else to refer the person to for the actual psychological therapies and such.

It is- the year I was admitted the average incoming freshman gpa was 3.75 (and from what I've heard it's only gone up from there).
We have a ton of very highly ranked programs from nursing to compsci (I know a compsci major who's fielding high five figure/low six figure job offers from Microsoft and a few other major tech companies) to english.
But for whatever reason we have more than our fair share of idiots too.
I went to high school with this kid. He graduated with a 3.1 gpa and one or two ap classes.
The only reason he was able to attend UW was because he was the number 1/2 4A hurdler in the state his senior year (and even then he only got in on a probationary basis).
He's a cool guy but it's disgusting how the article makes him out to be so much more than he is (and he sort of just nods along).

Even though I graduated from a very good public university (probably on the same tier as UW), I still dislike how much emphasis they put on sports and whom they will actually admit just because "they're good at sports". The team advisor will specifically select the absolute easiest classes/majors that these "sports majors" can use just to obtain a passing grade. I sincerely doubt that enrollment would actually drop if public universities stopped putting so much emphasis on sports. Most (I'm not 100% sure if all) of the Ivy League do not have scholarship based on sports, and yet Yale continues to have a good hockey team each year.

Yeah, I worked ticket sales for our sports programs and men's basketball/football were the only sports that anyone gave a damn about anyways.
I was on the UW boxing team (club sport that you have to try out for) and it was great. But there was zero recruiting among high school students and zero impact on academics.
Maybe club sports like that could take on a greater role- at least among the sports that no one really cares about (swimming, tennis, track and field, xc).
