I know lots of people who grew up in nuclear families that were plagued with other problems.
Some parents really are better off divorced. Of course optimally these people shouldn't have got married and had kids with each other in the first place.
I think I understand why parents used to have such a big role in their childrens' spousal selection (and still do in other cultures). It's best to marry as a young adult but most people under 30 still don't properly know what they want or what will be best for them in the long run.
I also think people should think more seriously about genetic compatibility with potential partners. You shouldn't marry someone who has similar personality defects from a family with a history of the same negative traits as your own.
