My personal theories are the following
The sheer unlikelyhood of creating what eventually turns into sentient beings means that it'd be spread over such massive time periods and such massive distances (not in the grand scope of the universe(s), but within the scope of the entire lifespan of the specific evolutionary cycle) that we'd never meet any aliens.
The specific circumstances required could likely mean any "aliens" are incredibly similar to humans.
If space is infinite then there's a 100% chance that aliens exist, perhaps in the past, future, or just right now, or all three.
The universe might work in cycles (technically making reincarnation true), meaning that "aliens" will forever and have forever emerged.

It would have both results. The advent of alien life would destroy a lot of Human cultural and theistic history. Religion would be forced into a corner and made to proceed down one of two routes: termination or adaptation. The jokes about a new Crusade would become reality real quick. Jihad would would join it to set mankind back. Fundamentalists would probably either jointly kill themselves or go on a war path.
After the quelling of that particular uprising, mankind would have two paths into the stars (assuming aliens didn't just purge us). Either we would unite under a common faith or advance without religion as an atheistic global governance.
The average SJW and /pol/tard wouldn't matter. I wager there would be a lot of "exterminate xenos: hammer war now" and self righteous "alien supremacist" cucks, but they'd be drowned out. Science and engineering would be placed at the forefront of Human advancement and we'd proceed to the next frontier.
Either way, I'd suggest a time span of 100 years after first contact (again, assuming we weren't purged) to see the first colonies on Mars and the Moon, probably with fledgling Terraforming technology.

Any race should take a few million years at the most to completely dominate the galaxy (would still be easily possible in hundreds of thousands), and with near-lightspeed travel it wouldn't take much more than a hundred million years to span a million galaxies.
So it's very unlikely that there's another race in our galaxy a few hundred thousand years old, almost impossible that there's one a million years old, and it's also unlikely that there aren't any hundred-million-year old races within the nearest million galaxies.

I've favored the 'too spread out' school of thought, that too few civilizations spread that far on the galactic scale while they're around, and having two civilizations be not only close in space but also in time might make encounters rare as fuck.
I've also wondered before if the slow spread of one race across multiple systems would even still be the same race after some time, since groups separated genetically on that kind of timescale will speciate (unless controlled rigidly I guess) eventually. I think the most widely accepted hypothesis is that such an alien race would go either go extinct in all colonies or alter itself in some manner such that it becomes unrecognizable to humans.

I know we are eager to discover shit. But really, where did our basic survival instinct go. There could be titans out there, capable of traveling vast areas of space in very little time. Judging from how we interacted with our own species, it would be a safe bet that being discovered would perhaps be our end.
All they would have to do, and they could, especially if they had the tech to travel rapidly across the fabric of space and time, would be be to shatter our world and strip mine it. Not that it has anything that would be useful to them.
The only other thing we would be able to provide them would be vast sums of bio-matter. Maybe we are being raised on the little world in bum-fuck nowhere as food.
I really don't give a shit what would happen if aliens contacted us. I just want it to happen. It would be the most exciting experience of my life. Whether it's a war or just a contact with a species that simply wants to scout the planet and see what we're like, it would be mind blowing.
I'd love to see their biology, I'd love to see their technology and culture. All the memes that would be created. So many new conversations and topics, it would be amazing.
If we were contacted by aliums it would be very likely that we aren't the first species they encountered. If aliums have mastered space travel and are advanced enough to detect and reach us they would have definitely met someone else before meeting us.
Imagine suddenly being part of this much greater universe when aliens give us maps of the universe showing us where other civilizations are and their history. It would be like being part of Warhammer 40K.
