If i slapped you in the face i started fight, it would be a morally wrong thing to do and would also be against the law. I should be charged with assault.
If I slap you in the fact, that doesn't give you the right to give fatal blows to my head. If you killed me after i slapped you in the face because you gave fatal blows to my head, you should be charged with murder, DESPITE the fact i assaulted you.
Now if i slap you in the face, and you then respond by giving fatal blows to my head then I should be legally allowed to take any measure to stop you from doing so, even if that means i have to shoot you.
All of this is to say, that even if i started a fight with you, i can still act in self defense if the fight escalates. Just because someone starts a fight does not mean that they cannot later act in self defense in the same fight.
