Wow. It's almost like the two things aren't related.

The couple expensive areas might be enough to develop the system. Then you may as well deploy it everywhere.
>>
>>73811304
Then me make machines to both take the order and make it.
>>

What? If the one or two areas pushed this and they saw it did help reduce labor costs, why the fuck not get ahead of the curve and do a wide roll out?

i don't think all wendy's will do away with minimum wage slaves at the cash registers.

I remember reading an article about automation (albeit in factories, not food service) where they said the rule of thumb is that you buy the machine if it pays for itself in labor costs saved in two years or less.

so there's a tipping point where before they didn't want to bother because the payoff period was too long, but technology only ever gets cheaper, and labor is getting more expensive, so we've probably reached the point where its gonna start happening.
>>
>>73810919
Definitely this.

However, there are still a couple of fast food places that pay attention to customer service. Chik-Filet (at least the ones I've been to) always have literate people taking orders.
>>

It was always coming. It also will never completely replace staff. Robots cant clean floors or cook burgers yet.

I think the breaking point will be when getting heavily into debt to go to college results in minimum wage with a good chance of unemployment.

People will just not bother.
>>

>>
BRAVO, MINIMUM WAGE FAGS
>>
Far as I'm concerned those people getting thrown out just hit the lottery. You couldn't possibly be making any higher salary from fast food that you could get from unemployment.

State should have a retraining program though to even things out.
>>
>>73811743
Bernie and most other liberals these days would never be for UBI. Its too fair compared to normal welfare and would get rid of mountains of Government bureaucracy. They would bitch and moan how the rich and privileged white people are stealing from everyone.
>>
>>73812602
I too have seen this before. I'm not sure when it started but I have seen in recently.
>>
But they would have done this regardless of minimum wage increases. Your argument is bunk
>>
>>73809874
Automation was inevitable anyways. Free market retards can't stand admitting it, but very soon we're going to have start thinking about how we organize an economy where there simply isn't enough jobs for the citizenry.
>>
There are some people that just cannot sit and study or apply themselves in any meaningful way to a job that requires knowledge and commitment. They were vital to economies because they could still dig ditches, clean things etc.

What will happen to these people when robots do this and college people are working minimum wage/ soaking up all the welfare in retraining?

They will be surplus to requirement and their children will be good for nothing too. There wont even be the hope that their kids can clean toilets.
>>
>>73812536
Saving money? It will cost them millions of dollars to develop and test the ordering systems. They would lose money if they only invested that development cost in commie neighborhoods. Also, requiring multiple sets of training depending on the location is very expensive for a franchise. Also, planning for the future. Progressivness is like dominos falling. Example: fag marriage

To be fair self service technology was only a matter of time. You can find self-service movie theaters, self-service grocery stores, etc, etc.

But the funny thing is progressives will cry fowl because when technology is getting in the way of their ideal socialist ways.

However when technology suited them like Uber and Lift because progressives looked at it as great technology because the average hipster can give rides. and not have to get a taxi licence.

I work part time while I'm getting my trade. Most of the guys there are what you describe. One guy in particular has no high-school diploma. No training in anything. That might happen. They had self service at a my bank. Guess what happened? Old people walked past the kiosk and went straight up to the teller. Then they had an attendee at the kiosk helping people. I remember seeing an older Italian man get visibly upset he had to use a kiosk.

The removed to self-service kiosk in the same year.
>>
>>73816615
the people that are willing to use kiosks bank online anyway, only old farts that want everything in person and on paper ever visit a bank branch.

what'll wind up happening as those people slowly die off isn't more kiosks in bank branches, it's just fewer and fewer bank branches.

Guess how many it serves when it breaks down?

Hint: Zero.

If the maintenance response times are any indicator back when I used to do food service, we'll have entire locations down for weeks and months at a time. Not even McDonald's can afford that shit.

Also:
>technicians/maintenance staff

Not a single fucking food service corporation or company has their own technicians or maintenance staff. They all contract other companies to do that shit for them. They won't be on site 24/7 OR on call 24/7.

Trust me when I say that automation will inevitably destroy food service, and you may well get to see McDonalds and Wendy's disappear in your lifetime.

If the minimum wage is not a livable wage then how can you justify working for minimum wage when the government will pay you more to not work? This is an important question to answer. This sounds like the argument against private roads. "Well if roads were private then every road would be a toll road, that'd be bad!" You have to consider that businesses will do what's best for them and invest as much as they reasonably can in self-service machines and compete with others on how best to automate food production and other parts of the business. They won't all rush in to automation without thinking about negative externalities.

When every industry went full automation they brought on full time techs to repair whatever is needed.

Having machines and robots prepare food is still far off for the big names in fast food. It's not that they can't, it's that they won't. Although it's kind of a joke as it is, every fast food chain proudly advertises that their trained employees personally assemble every burger and have some sort of special touch that their competitors don't. For them to have robots making the burgers is for them to tacitly admit: there's nothing special about the way your food is prepared, there's no love or care in it, the size and shape of the ingredients are all unnaturally consistent to better suit the repetitive motions of machines and to reduce the need for calibrations, and that you have a sociopathic interpretation of capitalism in which you care so little about humans, you're always looking for ways to take them out of the equation - the only humans necessary for your business are customers, and if there were a way to feed paying robots instead, you would.
This is why fast food chains only automate the process of placing orders, not fulfilling them.

It's an utterly irrelevant topic.

Americans in these threads are so fucking stupid.

Automation is coming regardless of wages.

We use it here and the cost is not comparable to human labor. Unless you can get workers working for cents per hour, you're getting automated.

We have 1 person operating 8 registers compared to 8 workers.

Abolishing minimum wage or raising it is equally pointless.

These jobs are gone (or going). That's the reality.

No fucking business, especially not one as big as fuck McDonalds, is going to forgo including redundancy as part of the overall design in a big transition like this.

Instead of one giant burger machine, it'd be two or three smaller machines and shift the employment model to eliminate most of the line workers and replace them with a handful of better-paid technicians that work regionally between multiple stores.

People said the same dumb shit about serviced gas stations back in the 70s when self-service was still a "novelty'-- turns out replacing people and adding more pumps was a whole lot more profitable and efficient.

We have automated service here in Australia at McDonald's.

There's no big shift in personel. They have high turnovers anyway. All that happens is they stop hiring and when people leave they shift the remaining to the back and other places. Open a new store? Transfer some staff.

No one even noticed or cared.

Retail is a dead sector now. Supermarkets will be gone in 15 years. We already have lost so much to Pick Up and Delivery services (that we operte) and have opened so many "boutique" stores which are basically glorified corner stores with a half dozen auto registers.
