That's what happened according to all the evidence, but they charged him with 2nd degree murder which has to be premeditated, and the jury agreed he didn't get out of his vehicle with the intention of killing Martin, just to see what he was doing.
But his actions ultimately caused his death. In the end it turned out to be self defense, which the jury said, but if Zimmerman hadn't been there that night and gotten out of his vehicle, Martin would still be alive.
Now let me be clear, I'm not saying Martin was some angel who din' du nuffin, but the whole situation was messy.
