The United States wanted to outlaw slavery, but the political elite in the South maintained all of their money and power through the use of slaves on cotton plantations.
In order to legally keep slavery, and to bypass the legislation they decided to start their own country called the Confederate States of America. But, the United States could not survive with a finical competitor so close to home, who could use slaves when they could not.
The elite in the south convinced the citizens of the Confederate States that it was about freedom, state's rights, and their Constitution and this led to one of the most costly and horrific wars in history.

Politics, specifically Ideological Politics was central to the war. The feds wanted to ensure the states fell in line with their centralized power.
The seceded states wanted to let the Feds know that we were a Union of nation-states with our own economies and freedoms.
Slavery was just a catalyst. The war was coming regardless, and I suspect it would have been over currency and trade in the long run, had slavery not taken center stage in Lincoln's politics.
Had the Feds decided, say, poppy was the best catalyst, then the same thing could have happened.

Most yankees don't understand the inevitability of slavery ending. They just assume that, had the South won, slavery would still exist today. However, in countries that had a much larger slave population and whose economies were even more heavily dependent on slavery than even the most Antebellum parts of the South, slavery still didn't make it to 1900.
Brazil, whose slave population numbered in the millions (at least 10 times the number of slaves in America at slavery's peak), outlawed slavery peacefully in 1882.
