>1 year into my degree
>realize that I'll be sitting at a desk with numbers and codes flying across my screen for the rest of my life
>breakdown and get into massive depression

I was sold this meme of the video game developer who has fun with his work..until I realize it's anything but that.

Is this why suicide rates are rising? People being sold memes about jobs?
>>
I just finished my first semester of computer science and I fucking hate it. I really don't want to do this for the rest of my life but I have no clue what else I would do that would be somewhat enjoyable + provide a stable income for a family.
>>
>>73751272
Video game development is for faggots and you will be competing with people who give way to much of a shit and are liberal beta males. Do something else. Web development is good.
>>
>>73751272
No because you went for some BS diploma at a local community college/private college. Do you really think you will be working for Steam, EA or Rockstar Games with that diploma. Pull your head out of your ass.
>>
>>73751460
This, do anything but video game development. I've never done it but I know those who have and it sucks the fun out of games forever. You're NOT creating or designing anything as a code grunt. If you really want to make games just do it as a hobby.

I'm glad I majored in electrical engineering though the reality is I ended up in a job that isn't much different than what CS people get. Still it's good to know that I also have hardware options out there and I could always go back and study something that would help for field/power engineering if I don't want a cubicle slave job
>>
>>73751448
Same situation.
Fuck. Why was I born.

>>73751460
Well. I watched these "behind the scenes" for games like God Of War, Mortal Kombat, etc. It looked fun as a hell, and as a kid I always wanted to do that. Now that I'm in computer science, I don't want to touch code anymore.

Web development is still coding. I don't see myself sitting for hours typing code, fixing mistakes, smoothing out code, etc.

I get depressed just talking about it.
>>
>>73751724
I'd consider switching to EE or even mech E if that's more your thing.

you can transfer skills from coding but actually use your hands a bit more and feel more satisfied with actually making something you can touch.
>>
Never mix work with your career.
>>
>>73751631
Yeah. I realized way too late. I'm done for.

>>73751719
Yeah. Fuck me.
What else can I do now? Work at a local grocery shop and get a stable income without spending much money at all?
>>
>>73751724
I was in Web Development and it's just as daunting: you will always work on boring projects unless you are lucky. The deadlines are always so short, you will be working long hours for a yearly income (so your extra hours won't get paid).

I quit and studied aerospace engineering and accepted a job that would have me working the floor rather than working in a office. Best decision of my life.
>>
>>73751719
i actually know a few people that work on an indie game. they had to invest alot of time and money into it. really talented people, i guess its not for everyone.
>>
>>73751809
EE looks even worse than programming.

>>73751867
What does that mean?
>>
>>73751724
>Well. I watched these "behind the scenes" for games like God Of War, Mortal Kombat, etc. It looked fun as a hell, and as a kid I always wanted to do that. Now that I'm in computer science, I don't want to touch code anymore.

Yeah a lot of the people that get into CS get in for those exact reasons. Your case is common. I like coding personally it's like solving a puzzle to me.

If you are only a year in I'd probably switch majors if it's feasible for you.
>>
Getting my degree in CS, I'm a senior

Probably going to go for a graduate program like MBA, or Med School

Software Developers get paid well but my dad was one and I saw the kind of hours he worked. You work when the job is done, not when the work day is over. Most of them bring their work home with them.
>>
Interesting to see so many people here in similar situations. Fuck I wish it was practical to major in something like PoliSci. I would go to the PhD level for that.

>>73752104
Lucky you. God damn it.
I don't know it what else to go.
>>
You could try IT. It's like the 'softer' development and involves dealing with people more. Some people hate it, but honestly it's not that bad and probably has more career security (coding gets outsourced but sysadmin and security stuff never will).
>>
>>73751272
>>73751448
Wow you guys are losers. You don't work for fun, that's a fucking meme. The proliferation of the "self" is a liberal meme. Do the fucking job that will give you enough time and money to pursue the things that you actually enjoy.

How many people have you met actually enjoy their jobs? I'm convinced close to 0. The same fucks who say "I found my dream job I love it!" are the same tards who spend 6 hours of the workday on some social media site slacking off and they barely put any effort into the rest of the day. The only reason why they enjoy it is because it's easy.

This sort of pussyfooting is why whites are losing ground to Sanjay Raja and David Wong whose 1st generation parents beat them until they got As and did their damn work.
>>
Coding is the most satisfying thing in life you fags
>>
>>73751272
Video game development is probably the LEAST fulfilling CS career. You just make what the game designers tell you, you're nothing but a code monkey. You don't get to make your own cool things, which is the best part of being a programmer.
>>
>>73751272

Just wait until a computer can write and debug code better than you. What's your job longevity before it's automated, 5 years? 10?
>>

>>73752226
The idea of coding as a job.
I started out coding thinking it was fun..thinking "I'll be making my own game soon, that'll be awesome."...then I slowly realized that maybe that wasn't the case and I'd probably be in some office coding something that I have NO INTEREST in. I'm just coding to code basically, rather than actually working on something I want to finish.

If you wanna make video games, can't you just teach yourself or learn from the internet? I'm not sure why you would wanna go get a degree if you wanna make video games, unless you wanna get a job at ubisoft or some shit. Even then, how fulfilling would it be to work on another person's game but not your own?

Also, my dumb ass brother switched from engineering to computer science. He didn't even do anything with the degree, but if he would of stuck with engineering he could of been making bank at the nuclear plant that's minutes away.

Welcome to economics friends. Was in same boat then went to economics. Still work with numbers, data analysis (with only a little bit of programming), but much more intellectually gratifying because it extends into philosophy, politics, etc. all of which I assume you are interested in because you are here.

Think about economics and see if it is something you want to do. You will need at least a masters degree to do anything worthwhile though.

Varies by department. Most of the decently sized cities here in Texas are waaaaayy understaffed [400 short of authorized strength here] and standards are very lax. My department uses a rowing test, at 6 foot 185lbs you have to do 2000m in 9 minutes, which is a joke. As long as you're not a felon, wifebeater, drug user, high school dropout, or drunk driver then you're pretty much guaranteed accepted to academy. You'll get run like hell and have to memorize a bunch of stuff but if you aren't a complete retard it's not that had.

Academy is paid, 8 months at 3.3k per month. First year officers are base 57k and not allowed to work OT, but salary increases fast the first 3 years.

Do you put it out that far? Work that doesn't require physical interaction is the easiest to automate. I don't think you need a full human replacement AI to learn how to program efficiently. You'll need guides to coordinate the software, but one guide could replace dozens of code monkeys given the speed at which a computer would be able to perform.

Paralegals have already been largely replaced. No one needs to go through 500 pages of phone records by hand any more.

How long until radiologists aren't needed to dread medical imaging? In a computer can look at it pixel perfect and run any and all enhancement filters in the blink of an eye are we that far off from computers given a more accurate and complete diagnosis than the human eye?

If you were looking to automate work would you automate jobs that pay $25000 a year, or jobs that pay $100,000 a year? The white color end is coming.

Gaining weight is easy as shit dude. I remember the first time I bulked after cutting weight (was always a bit chubby) I put on 10 pounds in like 3 weeks. Obviously a super dirty bulk and I probably put on like 1 pound of muscle, but if your only goal is to not be a skelly then it's easy as pie. Just eat everything in site and PB&J sandwiches are a godsend (500 calories if you lather on the pb and j, 400 for a normal sandwich).

Good luck man. No excuses.

Degrees don't even matter for most people. If you're going to be a doctor or engineer, then you should probably choose your degree wisely. If you're like 95% of other people, it doesn't matter. Experience will always be valued more than a framed document above your desk.

The truth is... you follow your dreams. If you want to become a blacksmith, you can ALWAYS make a living out of it. Why? Because from your passion, you will be able to craft some of the best swords we can see. Does it sell? Of fucking course. There is a reason why people still buy high-grade swords for over a grand.

Just to make you feel a little bit better; almost all doctors/surgeons who made it are passionate about their occupation. They WANT to become what they have became since they were merely a kid or a teenager.

Just do what you want to do in life, just don't be a sack of shit. You only become homeless if you literally give up on your dreams.

Richard Dawkins did not come up with the idea of memes, no matter what anybody says. Memetics was a term that was around longer than Dawkins and the idea of cultural contagions were pioneered by early psychologists. It comes, in large part, from the collective consciousness and collective unconscious of Durkheim and Jung, respectively. Those have elements of alchemy and ceremonial black magic folded in, which was passed directly down from ancient Egyptian priesthood through the Hebrews after the Exodus - which is how such practices ended up in Kabbalism and Freemasonry.

Memes are ancient black magic.

Sorry. Just saw this.

>What should I be doing during undergrad?
Internships when available. Go to www.usajobs.gov or if you're into private sector look for an internship there.

>Volunteer work
No unless it's for your campus or something. I did a lot of volunteer work for my undergrad and joined clubs which is how I ended up getting my graduate assistenship for my masters. Something to consider. No undergrad debt and completely paid for masters. Of course, grades and GPA should be your #1 focus. I think the average econ undergrad graduates with a 2.9 in America. Don't be that guy. Try to get 3.5 or above and preferably 3.8 or above. I got a 3.8 and that was enough to get my assistentship.

>Jobs to pursue
Probably going to be in some type of data analysis for companies. Literally every company has a team of them. Government stuff is always available as well. Or, if you're an absolute madman, get a PhD and go on to teach at a university. A masters is sufficient to teach at a community college.

Classes to take
The more math-based the better. ECONOMETRICS IS A MUST. More focus on micro, less on macro.

Also, don't do polisci. Please. Don't do it. Just get the economics undergrad and then the masters. It will help you get into a better school and better prepare you for the economics masters.

I'll be here for a bit if you have more questions.

Don't do it unless you're a pedo and want to teach elementary. If youre going to do middle or high school major in your subject and get an alternative certificate from community college after you graduate. Coding is legit one of the most boring and thankless careers in the world. They're usually salaried positions that require you to be at the office 60-80 hours a week.

It's also got HORRIBLE ageism. As soon as you turn 35 you're going to start having trouble getting hired because you'll be considered "too old" to be innovative or work the ridiculous hours that are required.

Best advice I can give you wrt college and career choices is to ignore everyone's advice.
>>
The problem is people are exposed to many things throughout their life but nothing in the common site takes hold of their motivation.
This is including anything in the arts.

Eventually they get to the point where they are "Expected" to go to college and get a great career. Later they realize they are working some shitty job doing the same shit over and over again for years and become depressed.

Nothing wrong with polisci man. But in terms of "value" polisci = coffee shop. Economics has much better prospects and is literally the king of the soft/social science because of the mathematics and data to help back it up.

Let me give you a beacon of hope though. There are classes like development of economic thoght where you can discuss things like what Adam Smith though, versus what Karl Marx though and actually read Das Kapital for example. Or in macro you'll learn about Keynes vs Freidman philosophies, etc.

I literally feel like polisci is built into economics and you'll get the best of both just by doing economics. Or just pick topics that interest you in economics. For example in my econometrics undergrad I did data analysis of what types of voters vote for certain political parties in the UK. There are ways to combine them, just be creative but you will thank me when you have an econ undergrad and not a polisci.

Polisci won't get you shit irl. Always pursue higher education though (for free if you can).

>don't fall for the "do what you love" meme.
I think it has it's place. I'm a major introvert and could never handle any place with more than a few people, so I just decided to pack my shit up and tour around Australia.

I eventually found a nice country town, moved in with a few ex-army guys, and just decided to begin doing odd jobs and shit that interested me. I fix cars, mess around with computers, stargaze and participate in amateur astronomy and other shit like that.

I'm happy with my life even though most people would consider me a failure for not tying myself down and shackling myself to an office.

But as for shit like "get a loan of a few hundred thousand dollars and start a video game company in a major city with extreme living costs", yeah, be smart about what you do.

I know a Vet Tech who enjoys her job. She gets along with her coworkers, gets to hang out with cute animals, etc. Only downsides are putting the animals to sleep which you get used to doing and it doesn't pay as well as a vet. But it's apparently a comfy job.

Why develop videogames?

Run Linux, write C, read Perl.

Do these for long enough and you can be a sysadmin or other type of developer.

I just graduated with a CS degree. I was lazy in school and did basically the absolute minimum to pass. Got a job as a fullstack developer making a modest 62k.

Don't go into games. It's probably the worst industry for coders. They're on crunch 365 days a year.

If you work for a good company that follows an actual design process, you'll probably only be coding 50% of the time. It's not staring at code all day every day.

I do data entry in finance right now.....seeing what people earn is actually pretty fucking disappointing compared to how many hours they put it.

To make lots of money and work regular hours you basically need to own something that is successful....or do sales.

I see high-grade level microsoft, amazon, google, etc. client data all the time, and they earn into the 250-275k range for salary and always have bonus, and various equity comp. With the exception of a highly bureaucratic company like boeing these people work like 60 hours per week or more. They work at the office then go home and work more....you rarely see people retiring from amazon or msft or similar big tech companies with good pay after age 58 or 60...people just get burned out as fuck in their early to mid 50s in many of the software jobs that I see.

All of our customers are financial advisors and what they earn compared to the amount of hours they work is crazy compared to executive level comp employees at big companies.

Small business can be pretty badass, but most are very poorly run and full of nepotism and inefficiency....once the boss gets comfortable the environment gets pretty stagnant and shitty for employees.

If you don't what to kill yourself during med school, you will want to kill yourself during residency when you make half of what your classmates in highschool make while working almost twice the hours. And if that doesn't make you want to kill yourself, wait until you deal with insurance companies for ordering tests.

Exposure to things not in the common site. Usually jobs in fields that people dont know exist but have potential to catch their motivation.

Fisherman is a good example.

And this was a 4 year school. Its like the couldn't even afford fucking cookies for every one.
Where could the money possibly have gone?
Obviously not to a competent administrative staff.

Colleges are literally turning into 4 year job training pyramid schemes now. Any halfway decent job in my area requires a degree.
Saw a data entry job posting for 12/hr that requires a degree. Some of these job listings don't even say what degree just a degree

>Born to late to get a job with just a HS diploma
>Born to early for the futures of automation
>Born just in time to pay out the ass to go to college and be an eternal manchild with three figure debt

You get what you want out of it senpai

I have two shitty degrees, a BA and MA, in political science-- a known pseudoscience. And I still have a decent plan to do what I love.

If I don't get into my top 3 law schools I'll take a job as an intelligence analyst in the intel agencies. Find something you can see yourself lasting in, and hopefully contributing to, and take the necessary means to pursue it. With a comp sci background you've already opened up a lot of doors in that respect.

Interpersonal and language skills are probably what I'd want to hone first and foremost if I were you.
