Austin here. I just got back home and my family explained it a little bit more to me. The TOTALLYNOTTAXI companies also tried pulling some illegal shit like offering people free rides to the polling centers and a free year of rides if they voted to keep U/L in town.
The reason Austinites voted to keep these fucks out is because these two are the two that refuse to do ID background checks and fingerprints for their drivers, which led to a day where a driver constantly went over the speed limit and shot like ten people. All of the other, smaller companies complied and get to stay, but after these shits got voted out, the VERY NEXT DAY the council said "yeah, we're not going to let the vote count."

I got a friend that works as a taxi driver, he says that uber pretty much bombed the market in Chicago. He tried doing it but they paid pennies on most routes except for a few popular destinations where they charged 2x-3x more than a regular taxi.
In the end he coughed up some dough and got a medallion and just does a few routes and spots he knows will pay well. When he's not driving he lends it to some other kid he trusts.
