It's bullshit because WW2 militaries were notorious for inflating sniper and fighter ace kill counts for propaganda purposes.
The fact that he also claimed to have killed 200 soviets with an smg, despite being a sniper, at the same time that he was making 5 kills a day sniping... well that should give you an idea of how accurate his kill count is.
Did I mention that he is also claimed to have sniped the sniper who sniped him and blew half his jaw off? Yeah.

I think you underestimate the incompetence of the soviet military. with literally half of the officer corps dead they had very few tactics apart from "run at the enemy trenches and conquer them". As far as I know he just prepared a killing ground somewhere in a forest and shot anyone who came in front of his foxhole.

I think you estimate just how gratuitous his claimed killcount is.
200 kills with an smg is almost certainly an all time record, yet he wasn't even a front line soldier and had no reason to be fighting with an smg, let alone to ever be in range to use it. When you factor in that he was also supposedly sniping 5 men a day while allegedly killing 2 men a day in close range battles and that the "day" lasted anywhere between 4-6 hours of daylight, it becomes obvious how heavily inflated his kill count was.
Don't even try to work out how many rounds he would have used killing those 200 men either.

If you know conditions of winter war, the story doesnt seem like bullshit. Guy was a hunter before the war started and frankly soviet soldiers who didnt even have camouflage are much easier prey than deers. He fought in the battle of Kollaa, so basically soviets pushing with 4 infantry divisions against well prepared finnish positions.

The way I see it winter war was more like world war 1 than world war 2. If i remember correctly the Simo Häyhä museum at Rautjärvi puts his official killcount somewhere in the 200-300 range (as in kills confirmed by an another person). I'm not arguing for "lel he killed half a division by himself" but for the fact that he was efficient enough to build a legend of heroism for himself.

And yeah, the story makes sense because there had to be finns with like 100-0 kill ratio to even the odds of Russia's superior numbers. They didn't just vanish.
But as someone already said, Russia had almost no leadership left, most of them had been sent to prison camps in Siberia because of some internal conflict or something, cba to look it up. Russians were basically cannon fodder.
