For a dramatic view look at Mathew vs Paul. Is every Old Testament teaching down to the last letter still part of his teachings as Mathew wants or is the Old Testament Law a prison that Jesus is freeing you from?

Of course we never have all the facts and even our own perception is far from perfect but at some point you gotta make an educated guess. Nothing wrong with following the teachings of Jesus. Just realize that in all the books of the bible, Jesus is only teaching in 4 books. And I tend to stick to Mathew and Mark only. So, in summary, make sure that you are following the actual teachings of Jesus.
And not Paul, Peter, "The Church," or any of that hopping around within the epistles. When its Jesus speaking in the Gospels, listen if you have ears, when its some other person speaking about Jesus, or some vision or whatever, do not forget to be a little skeptical.
