This is a good point anon. I feel like it is a common error for atheists to believe that without religion suddenly the world would be egalitarian, and all unjustice would be gone.
They justify this by the though process of, well I'm atheist and I'm a good person, and I look at this Christian (or often this act by a Christian hundreds or thousands of years ago) and see that that act was bad, while I am good. Therefore Christianity and religion are bad.

I read a really interesting book by Larry Niven called Inferno.
In the book, an atheistic scifi writer called Carpentier accidentally commits suicide doing a stupid stunt at a party and ends up in hell.
He gets sprung by a guy called Benito who has read Dante's Inferno and treats it as a factual account of his journey through hell, and uses it as a roadmap to lead people out.
It turns out this guy is guilty of terrible sins and hopes to gain the favor of God by helping others to understand hell.
Anyway eventually Carpentier has to accept that hell is real and not some hallucination or elaborate game show, and as he travels through hell and encounters all the horrible torments as he gets deeper into the "circles", his anger at God gradually turns into acceptance that this is God's final attempt to redeem sinners.
As he reaches the 9th circle and encounters Satan, Satan asks him if he would presume to judge God by his own standards.
The whole story is really just a progression of Carpentier's anger at the injustice of hell turning into understanding and acceptance of the method.
However, I could never agree with the conclusion of the story because it is God who created everything, including the capacity for sin, he not only enables sin but in many cases makes sin an inevitability. The standards God used to judge the sinners in hell were absurdly strict and the punishments were exaggerated beyond reason.
Carpentier changes his mind and accepts God but I never could.
