Total Wars that don't last too long are good for the economy
Protracted, low-contact guerilla wars (Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq) are good for absolutely nothing and just waste money, ruin the country they're in and create regional economic uncertainty

WW3 won't help with population control. We need a pandemic that wipes out over 50% of world's population indiscriminately. Otherwise our species will end.
Technological advancements. Mankind will never have a drive bigger than killing some other guy in the most effective way possible. Literally almost everything we use in daily life has its roots in warfare.
Even the humble crank was invented first to stretch a fellow man until his hands tore off.
