Well. Crime in general is still present; only that they no longer hog the media spotlight (i.e. no more films like The Santos Massacre: God Save the Toilet!; though one may still find quaint stuff like 'wives lopping their cheating husband's penises off' making it in shady tabloid headlines), and one of the reasons is stated by >>73517473.

Erap was impeached by the elites since his scorched earth strategy with the MILF, Abu Sayyaf and MNLF were detrimental to our economy.

GMA survived three coup attempts, all of them backed by the CIA because of 1)her abrupt pull-out of Iraq plus ransom payment to Al-Qaeda when the bus driver got kidnapped 2)her refusal to Bush when he requested that the PH send peacekeepers in Afganistan and 3)her close connection to Beijing and pushing for joint exploration in the Spratlys.

You've got a point, but, another difference between then and now is that Duterte's supporters aren't just unwashed masses. These are the new middle class, the ones who work the BPOs, the middle managers, the schoolteachers, in addition to the common people.

They're far more organized and partisan too, and my fear is that if anyone, including the LP, exploits this to create tension, it'll tear the country apart.

Yeah, not all of them, but specifically that segment of the middle class.

The "old" middle class is very much inculcated in the promises of liberal democracy and due process, so they're firmly in the Mar camp. This new middle class formed by the recent creation of more white-collar work is firmly with Duterte however, they're the ones more likely to be pissed at the current government's inefficiencies in public service than anyone else.

Well, to be quite honest with you, I don't think any of the other candidates are your man, not even Mar. The thing is that while Mar is a technocrat, he just doesn't have the pull to hold an office like the presidency.

To put it in memespeak, he's just too beta to hold it all together. He's gonna be facing GMA-2nd-term difficulty in the next few years, and it's really going to take a strong personality like Duterte to keep people from being completely disillusioned. A mediocre Mar presidency could open the stage for someone even more dangerous than Duterte to run for the presidency.

We shouldn't be so hard on our democracy, we're not doing half-bad for a country that's been in theoretical existence for a hundred years and in actual existence for 70.

But personally, we should really stop anchoring ourselves to Western standards of "platform-based" democracy like you said if you want to create institutions that are sustainable for our country. We're just different, and the thing is that our country doesn't really have any mold to follow so we'll have to painfully make our own path.

You could say so, but Duterte firmly has the power of narrative behind him and it ought to give him enough support through difficult times. At worst, it'll be Daang Matuwid all over again just rebranded with more nationalism and machismo. I hope it doesn't come to that.

Mar would have a much harder time because Duterte's beaten followers won't just give up, they'll be busy looking for alternatives to express their discontent. And he's a technocrat who will be forced to play along with the whims of some of the more unscrupulous parts of the LP. That's why I said that with him, he'll have a GMA-tier difficult term as president.

Analyzing it from that level, things look bleak, but trust me, in the years since the fall of Marcos, things have changed.

We're only now hitting our political adolescence with Duterte, perhaps one of the first manifestations of a synthesis of ideological, class and situational grievances in our democracy. People like Mar and MDS now have a certain solid bloc of "old middle class" that will vote for those types. Binay is an anomaly, but he is perhaps one of the godfather types that has progressed from the ground up.

Really, much more to it than what it at first seems. This is just how democracy develops.

I was there when Cory took power. The grievances I have with that lady...

She should have kept the bureaucracy Marcos had built up in his reign instead of focusing on making her own new agencies. Ever wonder why agencies regularly bicker with each other over the nature of their jurisdictions? A side effect of her decisions.

What upset me the most was how she sidelined many of the reformist elements that had gotten her into power in the first place. Doy Laurel, man. Gutted land reform too. Basically tried to "fix" things that weren't even broken. Hell, she could've gotten a whole load of that debt Marcos had left forgiven easily, but for whatever reason, didn't.

They didn't need to reinvent the wheel. They just had to democratize what Marcos had left them.

It's over for her though, she'll probably just go back to Pampanga and keep her congressional seat. I know one of Arroyo's grandkids. The trauma of her experience will keep their family away from national politics for a long while. Sad.

That's because Poe's ambition got the best of her, now she's seen as the ultimate opportunist.

If Poe just accepted the VP spot she'd actually win and six years later she can run for President and take Leni with her for the ultimate feminazi ticket.

>she could've gotten a whole load of that debt Marcos had left forgiven easily, but for whatever reason, didn't.

The Aquino admin had to borrow more money to rehabilitate the post-Marcos government.

If Cory said the Philippines will not pay its previous debt, nothing will assure the World Bank that we will pay any future borrowings.

It was basically a gamble
>Don't pay debts ==> no one will lend ==> bad for the economy
>Pay debts ==> foreigners will lend ==> increase the debt

It was a very difficult decision to make.

It's very difficult to say no to those people who were cajoling her to run.

If she would withdrawn prior, then either
>most of her votes would go to Roxas
or
>most who supported her will stay home.

Only by sheer virtue of how unstable and volatile everything was at the time. The Asian Financial Crisis, Dotcom bubble, the rise of Islamic terrorism all had their effects on us at that time.

Both Erap and GMA were surrounded by political enemies at every turn, and GMA in particular was forced to cut deals with what few (sketchy) friends she had. I give credit to GMA for doing what she could in that situation and steering us through it fairly unscathed in the long-run.

Roxas and Poe supporters are one and the same

Poe is literally LP-lite with another Cojuangco as one of her major donors and special interests as opposed to Mar who is backed by THE COJUANGCO

Poe supporters were also clamoring for an outsider to take charge in government, which is why a whole lot of them ended up shifting to the Duterte camp when it came to it.

A lot of the masses in Poe's camp would have defected to Binay too. The ones who would go to Mar would be the LP-lite crew who were unsatisfied with the current government, but they didn't make up nearly as much of the Poe vote as you imply.

Well yeah, that's exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. She was a technocrat surrounded by enemies all around and no real friends.

It's not that she mismanaged us badly, on the contrary, she fixed our economic fundamentals for the long-term. It's just that from the very beginning, people were questioning her legitimacy, and from 2005 onward, her presidency was simply in survival mode.
>>
>>73526993
Nope, I'm in the judiciary and I think that she's just butts heads with us too often. She was too political in her time at the DOJ. Selective justice isn't just a shitty Binay meme, it was a thing.

Marcos basically tried to nationalize everything:

>Because nationalized industry always leads to properity

This makes it ironic that he would use the Commies as his justification for Martial Law, when the Commies themselves have nationalization as a step in their grand plan.

Philippines had a good thing going but the events in the 50s-60s ruined it. The CIA and the Commies were fully entrenched and had a hand in the shadows creating dysfunction in the ranks. Pity that the best thinkers and lawmakers were very much active in that era but didn't get to do much. The CIA's handpicked president Macapagal bought in to the neoliberal economic policies and halted industrilization during the Macapagal/Garcia years.

>philippines
>removing kebab

pic related is the grand mosque in cotabato city, capital city of the autonomous region is muslim mindanao (ARMM) - a province of the southern philippines that has sharia law and its own kebab government like aceh in indonesia

they didn't remove kebab, they gave in and created a caliphate on their southern island

two of the regions of the ARMM (Jolo and Basilan) are home to Abu Sayyaf training camps, which they don't dare do shit about - in addition to the MILF kebabs all over the place down there

>has sharia law and its own kebab government

Only the personal laws of Sharia apply
>such as marriage etc
and they only apply to those who practise the religion, not to everyone.

Also, the Philippine Army still has jurisdiction as well as the national police.

ARMM is basically just like any other Philippine province, just with limited Sharia.

>home to Abu Sayyaf training camps
Defending the many islands, especially in the south is a daunting task for any country, much harder for a country like the Philippines.
