I don't know (about) all of these people but Bob Dylan for instance had an Evangelical phase where he converted to Christianity and he has often spoken out against atheism - and there's something almost "reactionary" about his folk aesthetics (in opposition to the the big city techno electro aesthetics) anyway.
And Miles Davis had to face a lot of heat because he hired white musicians and when being confronted about it, confronted about hiring white musicians instead of doing some sort of affirmative action stuff for blacks, he always said that he just hires the ones who play best, no matter the skin tone.
