Bought this book today, what am I in for?

Not real history.

Should have got Thucydides m8.

>Implying that anyone who doesn't have to read it for uni actually finishes these kind of books, instead of just reading the first couple of pages and posting a pic of it on the internet to profound how deep and intellectual they are.
>>
wew I just started reading it.

Prepare for lots of fucking geography but pretty dank Persian and Egyptian tales of old.

Greco-Persian wars are very interesting as well as the rise of Cyrus.

How does it feel to be the heirs of such a rich and beautiful history and yet your country nowadays is poor, downtrodden, and weak?
>>
It's actually a fun jolly read, not like Thucydides
>>
Half the Senators in Rome were Jews...
>>
It's a nice read. Not exactly "history" as such. More like historical fiction. So many events are true, but the author used a lot of artistic license. The Battle of Thermopylae is really good. Anything about that gives me the fucking chills.

Thucydides, as others have said, is also very much worth a read.

There's some wild shit in there! My faves are the blemmyes or people with faces in the middle of their chests and no heads. Study that book seriously and you might become smart about historiography, representation, and cultural difference. Be a lazy fuck and just brag online and chances are you'll remain a massive faggot.

Try these too:

An excruciating heavy burden, especially thinking that the current cultural reins are divided between crony capitalism and cultural marxism that will eventually lead to enslavement or destruction of the human race.

This is stereotypical SWPL behavior:

>Though SWPLs do not actually read to Herodotus, they like to believe that they are the type of people who would enjoy it.

>After having bought a Herodotus book, SWPLs will immediately begin telling everyone they know about it. This is because SWPLs see little to no value enjoying Herodotus without recognition from other SWPLs.

Not everyone reads for enjoyment you know. Stick to your Stephen King garbage.

I didn't know sargon of assad wrote a book

Thucydides is definitely a good one.

If you find reading a chore, you should probably go back to playing your vidya games and masturbating to anime.

Why the fuck not?

Never did I say reading is chore. I just said some read to learn, not for enjoyment.

Who are you quoting and why should I care about their opinion?

If you think learning is a chore, you're doing it wrong.

Thucydides is reasonably accurate but a little long winded and sometimes omits details where you want it and embellishes the obvious. Wish we had a Livy for the classical period desu
>>
>>73484196
A long dry read.

It's all just vanity.

There aren't any profound, serious debates about Herodot on /pol/ ... if people would actually read and care about these things, there would be actual debates about it here.

It's like the male version of that meme with the girl who posts a picture of herself with a drink an a Kurt Vonnegut book on Facebook but then actually spends the whole evening looking at memes.
>>
A lot of boring ass potentially ahistorical bullshit told in the form of anecdotes.

And then translated into English.

It's only interesting because it's the "first" written historical record.
If that gets your juices flowing, more power to you
