Soccer is only popular world wide because its the simplest of them and any old country can get into it. The US flag is in the top 10. It was better when it had 13 stars. Now it's too crowded. The Australian flag, if you look through a gallery of all world flags is probably the best looking objectively, followed by the UK followed by the US. The 'triband' flags of three coloured bars are the worst. The scandinavian crosses are way up there.
The Australian flag is more HONEST than the US flag. Afterall, if it wasn't for the language, law, people and culture of pre-1788 England, the country would look NOTHING like it does today. Sure, after 1788 we have diverged from each other, but that pre-1788 history is just as much ours (and the Americans) as it is theirs, so I think, since we have benefited from so much of their stuff as a nation, its totally honest and reflective of reality for our flag to take a benefit and influence from the Union Jack. This applies equally to the US. I double dare you to tell me that if the Brits hadn't come, the US would have even the slightest resemblence to what it looks like today. Yeahhh, the Indians would have done everything just the same. Yeah right. That's not to say that the US flag wasn;t massively influenced by the British one. In fact, the first US flag (called the Grand Union Flag) had a union jack in the canton (replaced with the stars) and it takes its colours and proportions from the British flag.
