When I rant about Bernie's socialism, they correct me and call it "democratic socialism." What does that even mean? Is this a meme?

This is not theft, this is robbery. Except it's not because by definition crimes are crimes because they are against the state. That doesn't mean you aren't deprived of your property, it's just that you have not been criminally deprived of your property.

Bernie is a Social Democrat, not a socialist.
Social Democrats often call themselves Democratic Socialists because they started as socialists and got hit by reality that a capitalist economic system is the only functioning option. They don't want to admit they're no longer socialists, but they can't lay serious claim to socialism.
What they don't understand is that Democratic socialism is something entirely different.
Social democracy: Capitalism with a welfare state to temper the excesses of the system and improve the lot of the poor. The rich still own and control the means of production but pay taxes to fund government programs. [Basically every state has this to some degree because it's an amazing protection against a revolution by actual socialists.]
Democratic Socialism: A socialist state where the workers control and own the means of production, brought about democratically instead of via revolution.
