This happened to the neighborhood I grew up in.
It used to be a mix of younger white families and older people living out their pensions. The houses weren't expensive, but it was a nice and safe place to live for people on middle-earning incomes. We'd hang out with the neighborhood kids, families knew each other, etc.
Somewhere in the mid-nineties everything shifted terribly. We moved away before it went to shit, but had to pass by our old house everytime we visited out grandparents'. More and more poor black people moved in as the old folks started dying. The younger families that started the neighborhood all moved away eventually. Clean, well kept properties began looking more and more like junkyards as broke down cars and other shit piled up in them.
The funny thing was what happened when white people began moving back into the neighborhood after the housing crash in 2008. It's back to it's original splendor-- yards are clean and well-kept with nice landscaping, lots of American flags lining porches... no junk filling backyards. It looks like a great place to raise a family again.
